Simons & Simons case records, I, 1819-1878.

Collection consists of records (1853-1868) of the Independent (Congregational) or Circular Church, chiefly pertaining to the purchase of a lot on Laurel St. in Charleston, S.C., owned by William C. Dukes; papers (1849-1866) of the Ingraham family; and papers (1819-1873) of the I'On family, including case records for Jacob B. I'On et al. v. Benjamin DuBose and his wife, administratrix of the estate of William Cleiland. Papers (1845-1868) of John B. Irving are mostly correspondence. Letters of 1851 from Keating Simons Ball to James Simons, Sr. concern the sale of some land to which Dr. Irving might make claim. Letters of 1868 concern the case of Read v. Irving, about Kensington Plantation in St. Johns Berkeley Parish. Correspondents include John B. Irving in New York, and his son Aemilius Irving. Also included is a copy of the will (1852) of John B. Irving's aunt Elizabeth Corbett of Charleston; and two letters (1868) regarding the planting of Farmfield Plantation. A letter of Feb. 20, 1868, from John B. Irving in New York, to his son, describes how important property records at Kensington Plantation were lost during war when the place was plundered by General E. E. Potter's troops: "the soldiers broke into my study, saw my tin box, supposed it to contain money, knocked off the lock, and scattered all my papers of value on the lawn." In a letter of Feb. 28, 1868, Aemilius Irving, writing from Kensington Plantation, states that he was unable to find these papers, which may have been "destroyed among many others at the time everything else in our house was pulled to pieces."
